Actually, the motto is "Ad astra per aspera", "to the stars through adversity/trouble". :) Latin is fun.

There are two different versions of it :-) I had spoken with a latin prof. at the University a few years ago about it. It was always my mantra, and was going to be my tattoo..but when I realized it was the Kansas state motto I researched a different version. Which is "Through hardships to the stars"
You can also say Per Ardua Ad Astra which is the motto of the Royal Air force. It's neat how it's so interchangeable.
